Amputee Fitting Rectangle

Education

Education

Our clinicians and prosthetists want to help amputees and caregivers as much as they want to help fellow prosthetists across the globe. They are a wealth of advice and suggestions, which can be extremely helpful to patients and caregivers they meet when they are out in the field.

Blatchford prosthetist helping a patient

Our prosthetists also share their day-to-day knowledge with us at the Blatchford offices, which we in turn, want to share with you and the amputee in your life. Our clinicians have many years of experience working with thousands of patients every year.

Our clinicians share a few tips that caregivers and amputees alike should always try to remember:

1.  A good, daily hygiene routine is an essential part of comfort and healing. Keeping the residual limb (the limb that was amputated) clean and try take daily attention and effort. In the beginning, this can sometimes feel overwhelming to the amputee. This is where a caregiver can help the amputee by giving them gentle reminders or helping them purchase socket liners that help keep the leg dry and healthy, such as Silcare liners.

2.  If the amputee’s device is causing them pain or discomfort in any part of the body (not just the leg), please let the prosthetist know immediately so adjustments can be made.

Sometimes a different device entirely may be required; and in that instance, Blatchford is more than willing to work with the prosthetist on finding the best device for the patient so they can pursue their mobility dreams.

Educational Information

Some patients see their prosthetist a few times a week if they are a new amputee, or if their bodies change in a way that doesn't allow them to fit into their socket (think weight gain, loss, or discomfort), and of course, malfunctions.

A socket may no longer fit perfectly as the amputee becomes more active and adjusts, which can affect the amputee's safety and comfort, so a new correctly fitting socket must be fabricated.
